Speak, and your words appear where you type.
Quoth is dictation for your Mac that runs entirely on your Mac. Hold a key, speak, let go, and the text lands at your cursor, in any app. Nothing is saved, and nothing is sent.
Thursday
Send the draft to Maria before Friday, and ask her about the reading list.
Book the train for the conference, and check whether the hotel is near the station
Locked hands-free: text appears at each pause.
Dictation that stays out of your way.
One key, no windows to manage, and the text goes where you were already typing.
Hold to talk
Hold fn or another modifier key (in the App Store edition, ⌥Space or another key combination), speak, and let go. Your words appear at the cursor in any app, usually in well under a second.
Hands-free for long thoughts
Double-tap the key to keep recording without holding it. Text appears each time you pause; say “new paragraph”, “comma” or “scratch that” as you go; one tap stops.
On your Mac, only
Whisper runs on your Mac's Neural Engine. Your audio never leaves the Mac, and Quoth keeps no recordings and no transcripts.
English, and many more
English-only models for speed, or multilingual ones that know 99 languages, most accurate in widely spoken ones, detected among the languages you speak.
Your words, spelled your way
A dictionary for names and jargon. When Quoth gets a word wrong, Fix Last Dictation teaches it in a few seconds.
The Quote Card
Talk into a small card that floats over your work, fix anything with the keyboard, then press ⌘↩ and it lands where you were. For emails, notes and anything you'd rather read once before it goes in.
How it works
Set up once, then forget it's there.
The microphone, and nothing else you type
Quoth asks for the microphone. The open-source edition also asks for permission to notice your dictation key, and only watches modifier keys like fn. The App Store edition's key combination needs no permission. Neither ever sees what you type.
Let the model download
The first start downloads a speech model, about 150 MB, once. Larger, more accurate models are a choice away in Settings.
Hold the key and speak
Let go, and the text is at your cursor. For anything longer, double-tap and talk.
Private by design
There is no Quoth account and no Quoth server. Speech is turned into text on your Mac, and the only thing Quoth ever downloads is the speech model you choose.
- No accounts, no sign-in
- No analytics, tracking or ads
- Audio is never saved or sent
- Transcripts are never saved or sent
- Microphone off between dictations
- Sees modifier keys only, never your typing
Two ways to get Quoth
The same app and the same speech models, from the store or from the source.
Mac App Store $1.99
Sandboxed by Apple and updated through the App Store. The simplest way to install, and a way to support the work.
- Pastes at your cursor once you allow it; otherwise each dictation is copied, ready for ⌘V
Free and open source MIT
Download it, or build it yourself, and it updates itself. It can read the text field it types into, which adds a few things:
- Spacing that fits the text already there
- Never types into a password field, and notices when you switch fields mid-dictation
Requirements
- macOS 14 Sonoma or later, on a Mac with Apple silicon
- 150 MB to 1.6 GB of disk space for each speech model you keep
- A microphone: the Mac's own, a headset, or AirPods
